The Salim El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Program at the American University of Beirut, Faculty of Medicine,
in collaboration with the Nuffield Council on Bioethics-UK and in joint sponsorship with Cleveland Clinic
announces its 5th regional conference on ‘Research in Developing Countries‘ which will be held on 13-14, September , 2013, in Golden Tulip Serenada Hotel, Beirut, Lebanon.
The conference aims at bringing together all those concerned (including physicians, researchers, scientists, those concerned with the ethical review of research, policymakers, and research promoters/funders) to explore how ethical research can be promoted in developing countries.
Objectives
As a result of attending this course, the participant will be able to explore:
- Examine how research priorities are set – and how high priority research can be encouraged
- Recognize the role of pharmaceutical companies
- Discuss the ‘exporting’ of research from developed to developing countries
- Discuss post-trial access to medicines
- Describe how the views of research participants can be better heard
- Plan support for the ethical review of research
- Work with, and establish IRBs Responsibilities of researchers (clinicians andscientists)
- Formulate and employ ethical reflection into scientific practice
Target Audience
This annual scientific meeting has been designed for physicians, researchers, scientists, those concerned with the ethical review of research, policymakers, and research promoters/funders.
Venue
The Research in Developing Countries conference will be held at the Golden Tulip Serenada Hotel, Beirut, Lebanon.
Call for Abstracts
The scientific committee calls for abstracts in all basic and clinical disciplines. The abstracts will be peer reviewed for quality of research and scientific content. Eligible abstracts include original research, educational or clinical work.
Abstract submission and deadlines
Electronic submissions to cme@aub.edu.lb will be accepted.
- Submissions must be text attachment following the format below.
- Abstracts must consist of original work that has not been published or presentedbefore September 13th, 2013.
- The deadline for receipt of abstracts is July 1st, 2013.
Abstract disposition notices and the accepted presentation format will be sent by August 10, 2013.

- Full title of paper
- Names of authors: All co-investigators should be listed using full last name andfirst name. Last name should be capitalized. The principal investigator should be identified with an asterisk and the presenter’s name underlined.
