MERETI is Launching a New Online Course for Members of Research Ethics Committees

The Middle East Research Ethics Training Initiative (MERETI) is launching a new online course for members of Research Ethics Committees (RECs). The course will serve as an  introduction to basic concepts in research ethics and research methodology.  The first offering of the course will begin on February 3rd and will end on  March 22nd, 2013.

The course topics include History and Principles of Research Ethics, Ethical Requirements of Research Protocols, Operations and Functions of RECs, Principles of Informed Consent, How to Evaluate Risks and Benefits, Concepts of Vulnerability, and Basic Concepts in Research Methodology. By the end of the course, participants will have acquired a sound understanding of how to perform an ethical review of research protocols.

The course is organized into weeks and each week will revolve around a separate topic and have its own set of readings and assignments. Participants will be expected to complete the readings and assignments each week and participate in the discussion forums. The workload is approximately 4 hours a week. An instructor will be available for each week to facilitate the discussions and answer students’ inquiries.

Online learners who perform the required activities will receive a Certificate of Completion from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA at the end of the course. For further questions contact matar.mereti@gmail.com.
