The Institute for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Basel, Switzerland (IBMB) is dedicated to research and teaching of biomedical ethics at the Medical and Science Faculties, as well as the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (a Basel based department of the ETH Zurich). We have a vacant PhD position for a SNF funded project concerning ethics of emerging biotechnologies. For this position, we are looking for an enthusiastic graduate student to study ethical problems associated with first in human trials, synthetic biology, and nanomedicine.
Position Available: September 1 or October 1, 2013
Length of PhD Program: 3 years
Qualifications:
- Excellent Master’s degree academic grades/evaluations. Position is open to all fields.
- Enthusiasm, responsibility, and interest in an academic career.
- Ability to design a PhD research project and to work independently.
- Applicants are expected to have excellent language skills in both German and English.
- Those with prior experience or knowledge of research methods/ Nanoscience / Synthetic Biology are strongly urged to apply.
We offer: Students will complete empirical methods courses as part of the PhD program in order to successfully conduct their PhD Project. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of bioethics, biomedical ethics, and research ethics. They will also have the possibility to contribute to the academic life at the IBMB, including small-scale contributions to teaching, as well as collaboration in research projects and academic publications in peer reviewed journals. Enrollment in a Swiss Bologna accredited 3 year PhD program in biomedical ethics (in English).
