This year, Dr. Samia Rizk, Professor of Clinical Pathology, an IRB member at Cairo University Medical School and a MERETI alumnus, presented a poster titled ‘Assessment of Self Perceived Risk/Benefit Decision Patterns By REC members in Egypt’ at PRIM&R’s Advancing Ethical Research Conference in San Diego in December 2012.
The research was part of Dr. Rizk’s MSc degree thesis in clinical research, which she obtained from University of Liverpool. She was the only Egyptian presenting a poster in this year’s conference. Dr. Rizk stated ‘many attendants from western countries in the PRIM&R conference still have the impression that Egypt doesn’t have organized research ethics committees’.
This year PRIM&R had 2,015 attendees, among which 135 were international participants with only 8 from the Middle East, as stated by Avery Avrakotos, PRIMR’s Education and Policy Coordinator.
